چکیده

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems allow participants to share their computational, storage, and networking resources to the benefit of every participant. Most P2P systems assume that all participants in the system follow the protocols and observe the system’s fair use policies. However, in a system with open or loosely controlled membership, participants have a self-interest in modifying their behaviour if it allows them to consume the network’s resources without contributing any of their own. As the number of these Free Riders in the P2P network increases, it not only decreases the effective performance of the network, but also decreases the incentive for others to participate. This brings in the need for good incentive mechanisms to motivate the peers to participate and penalize them if they dont participate. Gnutella and Torrents are two popular P2P network protocols. In this paper we examine several incentive mechanisms that could help improve the Free Rider problem in these networks.

A Survey of Incentive Mechanisms in Peer-to-Peer Systems

The fundamental assumption that peer-to-peer (P2P) networks can thrive on voluntary contribution of altruistic peers can no longer be supported without considering the impact of rational behavior on such decentralized systems. This paper attempts to shed light on the impact of rational free-riding behavior of participating peers on the stability and existence of real-world peer-to-peer networks...

Do humans identify efficient strategies in structured peer-to-peer systems?

In the last years, distributed coordinator-free systems, e.g., peerto-peer systems (P2P systems), have attracted much interest among researchers and practitioners. In these systems it is difficult to motivate participants to cooperate. To this end, researchers have proposed various incentive mechanisms. In this paper we are interested in the following question: Do human beings indeed use the st...

Analysing the Security of Incentive Schemes in P2P-based File-sharing Systems

For Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file-sharing services cooperation is essential. However, peers behave rationally and try to maximise their benefits, while minimising their effort. To increase system performance incentive schemes are used to enforce cooperation. Nonetheless, so called free-riders and malicious peers try to attack these incentive schemes. In this paper we will first explain two popular P2...

A Genetic Programming-based trust model for P2P Networks

Abstract— Peer-to-Peer ( P2P ) systems have been the center of attention in recent years due to their advantage . Since each node in such networks can act both as a service provider and as a client , they are subject to different attacks . Therefore it is vital to manage confidence for these vulnerable environments in order to eliminate unsafe peers . This paper investigates the use of genetic ...

Incentive Mechanisms in P2P Networks: Micropayment Systems

Today the use of peer-to-peer networks has been widespread; particularly in content sharing solutions; however its performance and scalability advantages are compromised due to the selfish behavior of its members. This is why authors have proposed financial incentive mechanisms to reward peers who share resources or content to the network. Several micropayment systems have been proposed for thi...
